The outgoing Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi Mensah, has promised to expel Fulani herdsmen from the Asante Akyem North Constituency in the region. Addressing the media in Kumasi on Wednesday morning, he also indicated that the Ashanti Regional Security Council will deploy more armed security men to ensure that the herdsmen do not return to the area.
The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang, has been championing the campaign the eviction of the herdsmen, who have been accused of carrying out violent crimes in the area. Three years ago, a Kumasi High Court ordered the Ashanti Region Security Council to flush out all cattle and Fulanis in some specific areas of the district. Following the order, the regional security committee set up an 11-member committee to implement the order, but the committee has failed to carry out the order.
The confusion between the locals and the herdsmen had come up again following reports of clashes that have led to the loss of human lives. The residents with the support of their MP recently held a demonstration during which they gave the traditional council in Agogo an ultimatum to help them expel the Fulanis or face their wrath. Security has been beefed up in the area to avoid an escalation of the situation.
